There are few people reading this by now that do not know of the crisis facing this great game of ours.  This game, this killer of men and breaker of spirits, which so many millions love and celebrate every week in America.  Our youth are dying and our Heroes falling and yet do we say anything?  Or do we just smirk and write it off to bad luck.  It didn't happen to you right?  Not your kid.  Not your problem. But across America as the injuries mount and the death toll rises more and more fans and parents are crying out for change.  Because for those of us paying attention we must realize that this killer that is running wild in the game of football has come to our youth fields and our  Main Streets and our NFL Stadiums.  The Concussion and Brain Trauma Monster is ours...all of ours. The body count and number of broken men and boys is rising daily.  Concussion's and Traumatic Brain Injury suffered on and the practice field and during games seem to visit every region of … [Read more...]

The End Of Football As We Know It Is Near

September 22, 2011 Dirk Knudsen WashingtonPreps.com Editor Talk about it in The Grid Iron The End Of The Game As We Know It I will never forget September 27th, 2009 because it was a day that changed my life.  And it was a day that will be a part of a much bigger story.  A story that will change the way we play the most beloved game in this great Country of ours.  It was a day that we lost one of the great young men in America and it was our fault. All of our fault. That was the day that Valley Christian High School student-athlete Andrew "Drew" Swank who was #15 died having lost his life to Second Impact Syndrome; a direct result of him playing in a High School football game with a severe concussion he recieved a week prior and there is little debate over the fact that many of those involved knew he was hurt.  But Drew was cleared to play and was hit again and again that Friday night.  He took a fatal blow in the game and as his brain swelled … [Read more...]

Red Wine and Grapes Being Studied for Concussion Benefits

Red wine grapes are the latest asset being deployed in the battle to solve the concussion crisis and help people who are injured recover more quickly and more completely.  We will have to see if this new research will bring to light any helpful solutions for those injured. Five Boxers are being used in the study at the UT Southwest Medical Center in Dallas.  This is potentially a great opportunity to once again look at the seemingly magical properties of the one of most ancient fruits known to man. Participants were given an MRI and a cognitive test. The brain test will be reviewed and compared if they suffer a concussion while under the trial. Researchers hope to release the results by December. If successful, researchers hope the results could be applicable to concussions sustained in other sports such as football and hockey as well as everyday incidents such as falls, car crashes and other blows to the head. Helmet Study Sends Confusing and Inaccurate Message

Football Helmets Are Not the Solution to the Concussion Epidemic

The sad thing about the media is that they report things without thinking through the consequences of their stories.  At least many outlets do.  A new study released last week is stirring debate about which helmet is safest for their kids to wear on the football field. Virginia Tech produced a ratings system of football helmets earlier this month based on their ability to reduce the risk of concussions. The study indicates that newer helmets are doing a better job of preventing concussions. The Riddell VSR4 -- which received one star -- was included to demonstrate the improvements in the new technology. So the debate rages and while it does our concern of course is that a parent or anyone might feel that buying a certain helmet might prevent their athlete from being hurt.  Worse yet outfitted with such a helmet the athlete often feels empowered and compelled to turn up the use of that same helmet while dishing out punishment. Let's be Clear. … [Read more...]

Remembering Brian Colvin of South Carolina

Brian-Colvin

It is with a heavy heart that we report to our followers the death of a South Carolina Football Player.  This time it was Lewisville High School player Brian Colvin of South Carolina. Brian was a talented athlete and a great kid by all accounts. He simple collapsed after he went out of bounds.  He hit the ground and according to many went into seizures and died. The official word was "heart attack" by medical staff and  coaching staff.  But an autopsy so far has not born that out.  At least not for sure. The thing is the seizures.  That does not sound like heart attack.  This could be a heat related death... it had been hot all week.  But this was a night game. Could this be another brain injury related death?  God let's hope not. One of the things we have learned form our members cases.... Second Impact Syndrome takes this form.  We hope and pray it was not.  But we sure hope the truth is found. Forget the posturing and the rationalizing.  This is … [Read more...]
