Division 2 Rules Get On Board…Finally

Here is the thing.  Why has it taken so long...until we now have guys dying at an increased rate for colleges to finally get serious.  Well thank god the Division 2 has begun the process and getting more serious.  Good job to them. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/wire/chi-ap-fbc-ncaa-concussions,0,2451776.story INDIANAPOLIS — A new membership rule will require all Division II schools to file a concussion-management plan beginning this fall. The Division II President Council approved the change Thursday. The executive committee approved the policy in April, and the new rule will take effect Monday. The plan must ensure that appropriate medical personnel assist with the evaluation and care given to student-athletes who have concussions. Texas’ UIL falls behind on concussion policy: Texas High School Kids in Danger

Here is our response the the TEXAS UIL and the Article listed below in the Dallas News:  Story is Here The story is quite revealing.  It focuses on the University Interscholastic League in Texas who apparently set policies for the Hundreds of High Schools and tens of thousands of Texas High School Athletes. Here is an explanation of who they are. "The University Interscholastic League was created by The University of Texas at Austin to provide leadership and guidance to public school debate and athletic teachers. Since 1909 the UIL has grown into the largest organization of its kind in the world." The Dallas News article stated; "Unlike guidelines recently adopted by leading concussion experts, the UIL leaves it open for an athlete to return to play on the same day if the athlete hasn't lost consciousness and concussion symptoms are resolved within 15 minutes." NCAA Hockey Passes New Aggressive Penalty Stance for Blows to the Head

This is a great rule that is being passed by the NCAA.  This makes total sense and should have been done long ago.  Well this is another sign that the lobbying and work that many of us are doing is taking effect at the NCAA and beyond. We compliment NCAA Hockey...men's and women's for taking this necessary step. Rule changes like this will lead to the cultural change in Youth sports that we are so desperately in need of.  Great Job to all on the NCAA Rules Committee. The NCAA News The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee is proposing more stringent rules and enforcement standards regarding contact to the head. If approved, beginning next season, a violation will carry a minimum of a major penalty and a game misconduct or disqualification penalty. A major penalty calls for the offender to be ruled off of the ice for five minutes, during which time a substitute is not permitted. New NFHS Will Protect Kids But Potentially Frustrate Fans and Players

The risks for players and coaches alike continue to rise on the football field and in many other youth sports.  As bigger, faster, stronger athletes are being produced every year the physics are undeniably changing. Mass x Acceleration = Force.  That force in G's is staggering when two opposing players collide. In fact Popular Mechanics released the results of a G-Force study they did.  An F-16 Fighter Jet exerts 9 G's on the pilot.  An extreme Roller Coaster exerts about 5 G's on the riders.  But a concussive blow on the football field was measured at a bone crushing 100 G's. An extreme blow on the Football Field can easily hit 150 G's.  No wonder more and more players are having health issues related to brain injury and concussion issues both in the short and long term.
